CONCEPT

The foyer of the new building of the 48th primary school in Conrad-Blenkle-Straße in Berlin-Pankow is a central and receiving place that introduces the building. The three levels of this building come together here to form a center of encounter for young and old, for students, teachers, and parents. A lively communicative situation will arise here, certainly a special place for the youngest students. At this location, the five-colored sculpture SINE runs through the entrance foyer of the music-oriented elementary school. When entering the foyer, one sees a floating constellation of related, colored lines in the colors melon yellow, luminous green, luminous red, pastel blue, and finally pearl night gray.

Tones and vibrations are represented visually in a curve representation by an oscilloscope; the oscilloscope technique is changed by the graphic design. Namely, based on the additive technical-tonal curve drawing, a sound synthesis is represented graphically and sculpturally.

This sculpture, consisting of five individual aluminum bands, is created from the artistic considerations of examining and depicting the color and approximation of a sound, tone, or noise produced by an oscilloscope. A wave motion is created here, which suggests an almost calming movement overall. The view goes from bottom to top, indicating tonality in five color levels, hung under or over each other, but intertwined with each other, as if to visualize the different colors of sound developments. According to Daniel Barenboim, sound is a purely physical process and not a sensation. In the Pocketbook of Physics, it can be read that sound, tone, noise, and bang can be attributed to a physical process. Energy must be constantly added to generate a sound. The description of sound colors is largely described by symbols of another sense instead of the sense of hearing. Sounds are described as bright versus dark, sharp versus blunt, rough versus soft.

The uniform symmetry and repetition of a vibrating sine curve that describes a tone is broken up in the artistic design. Lines cross. Strands are led parallel and harmoniously to each other. Wave lines with repeating sections are zoomed in and cut out graphically to serve as a structuring element of a single line. Big and small, loud and quiet can be read. The sculpture is accessible when passing through the foyer. These curves invite you to "touch" them with your eyes and follow their course in space.

In physical acoustics, a tone is a regular sine oscillation. A sound is the superimposition of several tones. The sine curve of a sound is not uniform, but it repeats. Several sinusoidal oscillations overlap to form a curve. The tone with the lowest frequency, i.e., number of oscillations per second, determines the pitch of the sound sensation. The other overtones cause the impression of timbre. A noise, on the other hand, is a completely irregular oscillation.

The submitted design thus takes up the idea of the images generated by oscilloscopes, in which a multitude of wavy lines meanders in the middle of the foyer and moves illusorily. When several tones are superimposed, a sound is generated.The individual tones can trigger a harmonious-rhythmic sound and an almost organic-like dynamic in the strictly grid-like ordered space of the school through their position and color.

The metallic line formation can inspire our sensory perception; it creates an illusory spatiality from every side of the room by the way it runs on it. The lines seem to move forward and backward depending on the viewpoint. Therefore, the moment of movement is the central motif of this design. The colored design of the color metal bands meandering through the space is precisely defined and follows its own logic and rhythm in the room. The sculpture floating in the center of the room acts as an anchor point and creates a communicative situation for all people meeting there.

TECHNICAL IMPLEMENTATION

The (theft-proof) sculpture centrally suspended below the ceiling is 19.6 meters long, 6.30 meters wide, and 1.25 meters high, in accordance with the distances between the individual color metal bands. It consists of 44 flat aluminum strips with dimensions of 100 x 4 mm. The aluminum strips are mounted with a distance of 0.35 meters to the bridge and a distance of 0.10 meters between each other.

The individual strips are first bent and pre-drilled, then powder-coated in the following RAL colors: melon yellow 1028, luminous green 6038, luminous red 3024, pastel blue 5024, and pearl night gray 5026. Finally, they are firmly connected to each other on-site in the room and mounted on the required points of the bridges on the ceiling with 1.5 mm thick wire ropes. The approved overload limit and the depth to which a sculpture may hang are taken into account. The materials used, aluminum and steel, are classified according to DIN standard EN 13501-1 for the construction material or fire protection class A1.
